Every day, large numbers of people and goods move along roads, railways, waterways, through ports, and via digital systems. This complex interdependence is under pressure. Traffic congestion is increasing systematically, space for expansion is limited, and cities are growing. At the same time, emissions and climate targets are becoming increasingly stringent, and the power grid is reaching capacity. These bottlenecks can no longer be solved solely through additional infrastructure or local optimization. With the help of AI technology, the sector can shift from local optimization to data-driven, predictive management at the system level.
AI in Mobility, Transportation, and Logistics
The sector is already making extensive use of AI. Examples include smart traffic management, corridor management (the coordinated management of freight flows on through routes) across road, rail, and inland waterways, urban logistics, and applications that utilize real-time traffic and logistics data. Digital twins are also being used; these are virtual copies of mobility networks that allow operators to simulate the effects of measures in advance.
Vision
An accessible and economically strong Netherlands requires that mobility and logistics be managed as a single system. AIC4NL’s Mobility, Transport & Logistics division connects governments, infrastructure managers, research institutions, and logistics chain partners, and ensures the necessary coherence in data, AI, and governance. Responsible use, human oversight, administrative legitimacy, and alignment with European standards are essential prerequisites for this.
