The current geopolitical situation—and the conflict in Ukraine in particular—is having a major impact on defense policy in the Netherlands. After decades of declining government spending, there is a growing recognition that autonomous security is essential. Cyber threats and new forms of warfare call for accelerated innovation and investment.
AI in Defense
AI is now widely used in the sector. Examples include weapons, unmanned autonomous systems, and drones, as well as military decision-making and operations. Specific examples include detecting threats through advanced image and pattern recognition, analyzing enemy communications using natural language processing, and improving strategic planning through big data analysis.
Vision
A resilient, autonomous, and technologically sovereign military requires close public-private cooperation. AIC4NL’s Defense practice connects the Ministry of Defense, research institutions, and industry to accelerate the transition of AI innovations from experimentation to operational deployment. In doing so, explicit attention is paid to human oversight, safety, robustness, and legitimacy.
