With an AiNed Fellowship Grant, Dutch universities and research institutions attract top international AI talent to the Netherlands. The grant funds the appointment of an AI researcher as a (tenure-track) assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor.
The Fellowship Grants are intended for Dutch academic research organizations that are making strategic investments in attracting AI talent. NWO administers the program as part of the AiNed program of the AI Coalition for the Netherlands (AIC4NL), with funding from the National Growth Fund. The fellows work in AI disciplines ranging from technology to the social sciences and humanities.
NWO awarded a total of fourteen grants. In March 2024, five grants were awarded to researchers working on AI in healthcare, accessible structured data, human-centered AI systems, the alignment of AI regulations with practice, and privacy-preserving AI for health monitoring.
Why this instrument?
Through the Fellowship Grants, the Netherlands is expanding its knowledge base for fundamental and applied AI research and providing research organizations with the resources to attract top talent. In addition to their own research, the fellows contribute to the national AI ecosystem.
As a research organization, you will receive funding for a strategic appointment that aligns with your research agenda. You will strengthen your AI research with a world-class international expert and, through the program, become part of AIC4NL’s national AI network. For the fellow, the grant provides an academic position in the Netherlands and the opportunity to pursue a line of research of their own.

- Dr. Rianne Fijten, Maastricht University:Integration of AI in Healthcare.
- Dr. Madelon Hulsebos, Center for Mathematics & Computer Science:The DataLibra project makes structured data accessible.
- Dr. Filip Ilievski, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam:Aims to develop human-centered AI systems with common sense.
- Dr. Konrad Kollnig, Maastricht University:Focuses on bridging the gap between AI regulation and practical implementation.
- Dr. Aaqib Saeed, Eindhoven University of Technology:Developing privacy-preserving AI for health monitoring.
