Health and Care

Today, the “AIC4NL AI Compass for Primary and Secondary Care” was published. This document serves as a crucial guide for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and innovators in a sector facing significant pressure due to staff shortages and rising demand for care. The compass offers an in-depth overview of current trends, barriers, and concrete recommendations for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare.

Cooperation and Development

The AI Compass is an initiative designed to provide insight into how AI can make healthcare more personalized, efficient, and effective. This document was developed in close collaboration with the AI Coalition for the Netherlands (AIC4NL) and the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS). The current state of affairs was assessed through desk research and interviews with experts in the field.

Highlights from the Kompas

The sources show that AI in primary and secondary care is no longer a distant prospect, but is already well underway:

  • Reducing administrative burdens: Applications such as AI-powered “ambient scribes” can automatically summarize doctor-patient conversations in the patient’s medical record, freeing up more time for personal interaction.
  • Smart Triage: Digital tools help physician assistants and primary care physicians prioritize patient requests, which improves access to care and reduces wait times on the phone.
  • Diagnostic support: AI models help identify bone fractures on X-rays more quickly and detect skin cancer and risks of chronic diseases such as diabetes at an early stage.
  • Personalized prevention: Wearables and apps give patients more control over their own health through data-driven nutrition and lifestyle recommendations.

Key Findings and Recommendations

To fully harness the potential of AI, the Compass draws a number of key conclusions in the form of seven core recommendations:

  1. Laws and regulations: There is an urgent need for clarity regarding legal frameworks such as the EU AI Act for everyday practical use.
  2. AI Readiness: Healthcare organizations must invest in technical infrastructure and interoperable data.
  3. AI Literacy: It is essential that both healthcare professionals and patients receive training to use AI applications ethically and effectively.
  4. National coordination: To prevent fragmentation, a joint approach by umbrella organizations, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, and the AI Coalition is necessary.
  5. Diversification: The focus should extend beyond language models; AI for diagnostics and risk profiling also deserves attention.
  6. Validated sources: When using chatbots, preference should always be given to tools based on verified Dutch medical guidelines.
  7. Learning ecosystem: The Netherlands must work toward a transparent system in which knowledge about what does and does not work is widely shared.

The AI Compass is presented as a “living document” that will be updated regularly to keep pace with the rapid developments in the field of AI.
