Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to make a major contribution to elder care. But how can we use AI effectively and responsibly to future-proof this sector? With this question in mind, Pieter Jeekel and Edith van de Weg (Health & Care Working Group, NL AIC) together with Dirk Lukkien and Brent Opmeer (Vilans) have conducted a thorough inventory in recent months. Their findings are reflected in the report AI-KOMPAS for elderly care. The report sheds new light on the needs, opportunities and obstacles of AI in elderly care.
Why AI is essential for elder care
The challenges in elder care are immense. An aging population, staff shortages and rising care costs are weighing heavily on the sector. AI offers hopeful prospects, from smart scheduling algorithms to care-assisting robots. However, the survey shows that AI's impact so far remains limited by technical and organizational barriers. Many organizations are still looking for ways to make the most of AI's added value.
Opportunities and challenges identified
In conversations with healthcare organizations, three crucial questions were asked:
- What needs do elder care organizations have where AI can play a role?
- What does it take to successfully implement AI applications?
- What opportunities and obstacles do stakeholders see in taking advantage of AI?
The survey shows that AI is already being used for administrative relief and smart scheduling, but that healthcare applications are often avoided because of complex ethical and legal issues.
Recommendations for a future with AI
The report contains seven concrete recommendations to accelerate AI in elder care:
- Develop an industry-wide AI vision: A shared strategy helps organizations better guide AI initiatives.
- Invest in AI knowledge and skills: Administrators and healthcare workers need training to understand and apply the capabilities of AI.
- Establish a strong digital foundation: Good information management is essential to implement AI effectively.
- Carefully integrate AI into healthcare processes: This requires culture change and close collaboration among stakeholders.
- Weighing costs and benefits: A systematic evaluation helps better understand the impact of AI.
- Ethical trade-offs: AI must be deployed transparently and equitably, with safeguards for privacy and autonomy.
- Encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing: An AI network can combat fragmentation and move the industry forward.
The NL AIC and Vilans emphasize that cooperation and involvement of all parties are crucial to effectively deploy AI. The results of this inventory represent an important step toward a future in which AI is not only innovative, but also creates social value.
