Responsible AI applications in the technical industry 

The manufacturing industry is under pressure to produce more efficiently, flexibly, and sustainably, and digitization and automation are playing an increasingly important role in this. Many companies are struggling with the question of how to implement new technologies without compromising quality, safety, and human labor. In an industry where decisions directly impact production processes and working conditions, the use of AI requires careful consideration. 

The role of AI in the technical industry 

AI-powered systems help companies optimize production, maintenance, and logistics. Examples include predictive maintenance, quality control using sensors, and digital tools that support employees. Such applications reduce waste and enable smarter work practices. 

The use of AI also raises questions. A lack of understanding of how algorithms make decisions can lead to uncertainty about accountability, and choices regarding data and design affect employees’ autonomy, workload, and safety. AI in the technical industry therefore requires an ethical, legal, and societal perspective in addition to the technical one. 

About the ELSA Lab AI for Technical Industry 

The ELSA Lab AI for Technical Industry (ELSA4TI) develops knowledge and practical guidelines for the responsible use of AI in the technical industry. The lab helps companies navigate the regulations of the AI Regulation, with human values as its guiding principle. 

The lab takes a unique approach: futuring. This is a structured method for working with companies to explore where the industry stands today, what future it is striving for, and what steps are needed now to safely move toward that future. ELSA4TI focuses on four questions: 

  1. What is the current situation with AI implementation? 
  1. What does a desirable future scenario look like? 
  1. What must managers do today to achieve that future? 
  1. How can industry help shape regulations and policies? 

The ultimate goal is to develop AI applications that are legally compliant, ethically responsible, socially just, and economically sustainable.
