Last week, the NL AIC in collaboration with Kickstart AI and Erasmus MC brought together healthcare professionals from the Netherlands to discuss how healthcare problems can be solved with AI. Kickstart AI and Erasmus MC recently partnered to explore how to improve efficiency and quality of care in the Emergency Department using AI.
During the December 12, 2024 event, under the guidance of Nicky Hekster on behalf of the Health and Care Working Group, the first lessons learned around operationalizing the use case were shared with stakeholders, including several participants in this working group.
Improve efficiency and quality of care using AI
Erasmus MC aims to use AI technology to improve the efficiency and quality of care in the Emergency Department. A team of dedicated AI experts and software engineers from Kickstart AI is developing a data-driven solution that will enable doctors and nurses at Erasmus MC to actively use data to make informed decisions in their daily practice. This will not only focus on the software needed to integrate that model into Erasmus MC's current digital environment, but will also pay close attention to usability.
The team aims to achieve a seamless connection between AI technology and the daily work of healthcare professionals in order to achieve maximum impact in patient care. Most importantly, the insights generated in this track are valuable to a wider audience and contribute to the development and adoption of AI in the Netherlands. This boosts both innovation and productivity and strengthens the competitive position of the Netherlands.
Learning event on Dec. 12, 2024
During a productive morning, two speakers discussed what makes an AI use case successful and the steps you need to follow if you want to implement AI effectively as an organization.
Marjolein Kremers, head of the Emergency Department at Erasmus MC, explained how the use case was developed at Erasmus MC and what is involved. One of the things Marjolein pointed out was, "To really innovate, we need to dive deep into the content of the use case and understand that each component, such as the Emergency Department, is just one part of a larger interconnected process. Success lies in involving all stakeholders and to start small but concrete."
Sophia Zitman, AI Project Lead at Kickstart AI, focused her contribution on providing practical guidelines for developing a use case. Sophia said, "AI is a powerful tool, but its true potential is only unlocked through thoughtful implementation and organizational integration. Remember that the heart of any AI project is its impact on people. Involve your end users from the beginning; this is the most important step to successfully implementing AI.

Our thanks to all healthcare professionals for sharing their ideas and insights during the Learning Event on December 12, 2024. Kickstart AI will now continue working with Erasmus MC to implement this use case in practice.
About the National AI Challenge
Kickstart AI and the Dutch AI Coalition (NL AIC) both focus on promoting the development and application of AI in the Netherlands. As a first step in the collaboration, a National AI Challenge was set up for participants in the NL AIC in 2024. With the goal of joining forces to address concrete challenges that companies or civil society organizations face in practice, and solve them with the help of AI.
