AI offers great opportunities for business, but not all companies manage to recognize where those opportunities lie and/or take advantage of them. And that while the Netherlands has a very strong knowledge position in the field of AI. That is why the Dutch AI Coalition (NL AIC) and Kickstart AI are joining forces and organizing the National AI Challenge.
Join the National AI Challenge
We are calling on companies and civil society organizations to submit a use case where AI can bring optimization to business operations. Moreover, to have a chance of being selected, the use case should be relevant to multiple parties. Formulating a good use case,does not require broad knowledge of AI. "First and foremost, it is important to know your own business well, and figure out where the bottlenecks are," says Janneke Niessen, jury member of the National AI Challenge and founder and investor at CapitalT. "It's a pitfall to think that you have to look for applications from within the technology. After all, if you know your business well, where bottlenecks are and where you want to go with your business, then you can more easily recognize where opportunities are for the application of AI," continues Janneke.
Selection Criteria
The selection process carefully considers whether the intended AI application will actually have a positive impact on the organization's strategy, operations and/or employees. It is also important that the insights from the challenge are widely shareable and that there is sufficient and qualitative data available to solve the challenge. Interested in submitting a use case? The challenge is open to participants in the NL AIC, and organizations working with an NL AIC participant on the use case.
What is a promising use case?
A good use case example is predicting the number of guests in the hospitality industry. With this, purchasing and occupancy can be better planned to optimize costs. Such a use case can be optimized excellently by AI and is significant for almost the entire hospitality industry. The winning use case will be developed by a team of data scientists and software engineers for 3 to 9 months. "That's really unique about this challenge. In fact, we find that many companies lack the knowledge and access to data scientists needed to get started with AI. That is why we do not choose to simply offer an amount, but rather offer practical help from experts," said Janneke Niessen.
Purpose National AI Challenge
The purpose of the National AI Challenge is not only to develop the winning use case, but also to serve as inspiration for how AI can improve, accelerate and/or make business operations more efficient. "With the National AI Challenge we want to give a push to the development and adoption of AI, because currently we are not doing so well in that area in the Netherlands. Despite our solid position in the field of AI knowledge and innovation, the wider business community is not yet sufficiently anticipating the opportunities offered by the technology. Among other things, this is to the detriment of the productivity of Dutch companies," continued Janneke Niessen.
With wider adoption of AI in the Netherlands, the talent pool of software engineers and data scientists will also grow. This will make this talent more widely available in the Netherlands, boosting both innovation and productivity and strengthening the competitive position of the Netherlands.
