Working together on responsible development and deployment of AI, how do you do it? Read all about it in the second edition of the ELSA Labs magazine. In the ELSA Labs, based on the ELSA concept, research and collaboration on the responsible development and deployment of AI is being done in an innovative way. ELSA stands for Ethical, Legal & Societal Aspects.

ELSA Labs are consortia in which government, industry, social partners, knowledge institutions and residents of the Netherlands are represented in addition to scientists. Together they explore how AI can contribute responsibly to our society.

Discover how ELSA Labs are pioneering research on the ethical, legal and social impact of AI. The second edition of ELSA Labs magazine focuses on the ELSA Labs' approach and methods.

"This magazine nicely illustrates the diversity and cohesiveness of the ELSA Labs. Methods for working responsibly with AI are in high demand. Especially now that the European AI regulation is a fact. So the work of the ELSA Labs is relevant to all NL AIC participants and the broader AI field," said Pieter van Boheemen, chair of the Working Group on Human-centered AI.

Learning from each other is essential

In the ELSA Lab networking project, ELSA Labs work together to learn from each other. In this edition of the ELSA Labs magazine, the ELSA Labs discuss their research question, the challenges they face and how they shape the collaboration with all partners in their consortium. The approaches and methods used in the various ELSA Labs vary widely. This edition of the ELSA Labs magazine introduces you to these methods, and the researchers and collaborators involved.

Purpose ELSA Labs

The goal of the ELSA Labs is to develop knowledge that contributes to the responsible development and deployment of AI. The Netherlands' leading position in the Global Index on Responsible AI shows that the Netherlands takes the responsible development and deployment of AI seriously. The ELSA Labs are one of the tools that contribute to occupying this frontrunner position.

More information ELSA concept

We would like to invite you to peruse the portfolio of all 22 ELSA Labs in the Netherlands for inspiration or to explore opportunities to learn from them or perhaps collaborate. The ELSA concept provides a good foundation for the development and application of human-centered AI solutions. By developing human-centered AI with clear ethical and legal frameworks and actively involving stakeholders. Responsible development and implementation of AI is about much more than algorithm development. Questions such as how, where and by whom they are applied and under what conditions are essential and are central to the ELSA approach.
