Global ambitions in the field of AI are enormous. Plans involving billions are popping up everywhere. AI is BIG. In January, we saw the kickoff of this race in the U.S. with the Stargate project, valued at between 100 and 500 billion dollars. In Europe, France kicked things off with 30 to 50 billion for AI data centers and 109 billion for a broad AI program. The EU then topped that with the 200-billion-euro InvestAI initiative. When it comes to AI regulation, positions seem to be hardening. In early February, a new section of the AI ACT went into effect (prohibitions and AI literacy), while Trump repealed his predecessor Biden’s AI regulations and Vance warned in Paris that overly rigid AI regulation could well be the death knell for AI.
What do these staggering billions and this intensifying regulatory battle mean for us in the Netherlands?
These major investments will, in particular, accelerate all kinds of AI developments. The Netherlands simply cannot afford to let this opportunity pass it by. This involves, on the one hand, participating in the InvestAI initiative at the European level and, on the other hand, strengthening the AI adaptation and AI absorption capabilities of Dutch citizens, governments, and businesses.
At AIC4NL, we are actively working on this through our international agenda, which includes our work within ALT-EDIC, the OpenEuroLLM project, our involvement in Adra—the AI-Data-Robotics Association—and the establishment of a Dutch AI Factory as part of the European network of AI Factories. In this way, we ensure that Dutch expertise finds its way into European solutions and that the Netherlands remains well-connected to the latest European developments.
In addition, as AIC4NL, we invest in skills. The success of AI will depend primarily on its adoption by citizens, businesses, and governments. They must be able to understand what AI truly contributes, how regulations govern its use, and, based on that, chart a course for the responsible deployment of AI. We do this through our Innovation Labs, our ELSA Labs, and our Learning Communities. And this is just the beginning. As AIC4NL, we will continue to invest heavily in strengthening the Netherlands’ position in AI in the coming years. Developments in AI are happening at breakneck speed.
