Using AI for transparent and reliable media

The media sector is increasingly dominated by AI and machine learning, from content production to distribution. This offers opportunities, but also poses risks: think of filter bubbles, fake news, and polarization. Disinformation and polarization threaten the vitality of democratic society.

The role of AI in media

AI can exacerbate these problems, for example through feedback loops in recommendation systems. At the same time, AI also offers opportunities to find solutions: algorithms can recognize patterns of disinformation, and recommendation systems can be designed with diversity and inclusivity as a starting point.

About the ELSA Lab AI, Media & Democracy

The ELSA Lab AI, Media & Democracy therefore focuses on the ethical, legal, and social aspects of AI (ELSA) in the media sector. It investigates how AI systems can be designed to be transparent, explainable, and reliable. This should prevent technology from undermining media rather than supporting it.

The goal: theoretically sound frameworks and methods that strengthen the functioning of independent and fact-based media. The lab aims to make media professionals aware of the possibilities and risks of AI. This will generate knowledge, insight, and practical support for the responsible use of AI, enabling the media to continue to fulfill their democratic role.

Guiding responsible AI in media

The ELSA Lab develops models, methods, and guidelines for the responsible use of AI in the media sector. Public and academic parties are working together on this shared task. This means, among other things, that the lab is working on:

  • Models and algorithms that reveal and counteract disinformation and polarization.
  • Strengthening diversity and inclusivity in recommendation systems using new evaluation criteria.
  • Legal and ethical guidelines that are consistent with the democratic role of the media.
  • Practical tools and prototypes for media professionals, developed in close collaboration with the sector.

Collaboration partners

The ELSA Lab collaborates with partners from media and culture, including:

  • Utrecht Media Lab
  • Cultural AI Lab
