Responsible AI applications in the technical industry

The technical industry is under pressure to produce more efficiently, flexibly, and sustainably. Digitization and automation are playing an increasingly important role in this. At the same time, many companies are struggling with the question of how they can deploy new technologies without compromising on quality, safety, and human labor. In this sector in particular, where decisions have a direct impact on production processes and working conditions, the use of AI requires careful consideration.

The role of AI in the technical industry

AI-supported systems can help companies optimize production, maintenance, and logistics. Examples include predictive maintenance, quality control using sensors, and employee support via digital tools. These applications offer opportunities to work more efficiently and reduce waste.

However, the use of AI also raises questions. Insufficient insight into how algorithms make decisions can lead to uncertainty about responsibility. Choices in data and design can also affect the autonomy, workload, and safety of employees. This makes it necessary to approach AI in the technical industry not only from a technical perspective, but also from an ethical, legal, and social perspective.

About the ELSA Lab AI for Technical Industry

ELSA4TI builds knowledge and practical tools for the responsible use of AI in the technical industry. The lab helps companies and industry navigate the complex regulations of AI law, while keeping human values at the forefront.

The lab operates based on a unique approach: futuring. This is a structured method for exploring, together with companies, where the industry stands today, what future it is striving for, and what steps are now needed to work safely toward that future. ELSA4TI focuses on four questions in this regard:

  1. What is the current situation with AI implementation?
  1. What does a desirable future scenario look like?
  1. What must managers do today to achieve that future?
  1. How can industry help shape regulations and policies?

The ultimate goal is to develop AI applications that are legally compliant, ethically responsible, socially just, and economically sustainable.

Guiding AI in the technical industry

The ELSA Lab AI for Technical Industry is working on concrete approaches and tasks to guide responsible AI applications in industrial contexts. Among other things, the lab is working on:

  • Practical guidelines for designing, implementing, and evaluating AI-supported systems in production environments.
  • Guidelines for governance and accountability, so that it is clear who is responsible for what in AI-supported decision-making.
  • Research into the impact of AI on work, including autonomy, skills, and collaboration between humans and technology.
  • Methods for human-centered design choices, in which safety, comprehensibility, and control are central.
  • Knowledge sharing and dialogue between companies, employee representatives, researchers, and policymakers on responsible AI in industry.

These activities are aimed at supporting organizations in making informed choices about AI that are appropriate to their context and responsibilities.

Collaboration partners

Within the ELSA Lab AI for Technical Industry, knowledge institutions, companies, and social organizations work together on shared issues surrounding AI and industry.
