Learning by doing: together we accelerate AI in the manufacturing industry
The Dutch manufacturing industry is under pressure. Labor shortages and an aging population are limiting production capacity, while international competition and stricter sustainability requirements are demanding faster innovation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers powerful solutions for quality control, predictive maintenance, and process optimization. At the same time, there is a shortage of qualified AI talent.
That is why AMELIA was launched: one of the five AiNed Learning Communities. At AIC4NL, we use AMELIA to encourage practical collaboration between companies, vocational, higher professional, and university education institutions, and AI experts in the northern and eastern Netherlands. The goal is clear: to accelerate and make AI applications within the manufacturing industry more sustainable.
Learning together by doing
AMELIA operates according to the principle of learning by doing. Companies, researchers, and experts learn from and with each other through concrete practical cases that are worked through jointly. In addition to learning, AI solutions are also developed, tested, and improved directly in the workplace.
The approach consists of:
- Practical case studies
- Interactive workshops for knowledge sharing and training
- An open digital platform with AI learning materials, such as knowledge clips, articles, and quizzes.
The focus is on three areas of application:
- People: support for process operators, for example with a "smart manual"
- Products: automated quality control with AI
- Machines: predictive maintenance to prevent breakdowns
Part of a nationwide AI movement
AMELIA is an AI Learning Community within the national AI network of AIC4NL and is supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs via RVO. Within AIC4NL, companies, social organizations, and educational institutions strengthen their AI competencies through practical cases, including in the technical industry.
With AMELIA, we are continuing to build a future-proof, innovative, and competitive manufacturing industry.
The following partners are affiliated:
- Knowledge partners: Windesheim, Saxion, University of Twente, NHL Stenden, Firda, Deltion College
